Laurie Brauer

For

Champaign County Coroner

JUST ADDED: Laurie’s spot with Stevie Jay Broadcasting!

I’m the most qualified candidate to be the Champaign County Coroner because I’ve spent the majority of my career at the intersection of healthcare and public safety- a very unique background for a very unique position.  My experience includes:

  • Deputy Coroner since 2021. I’m qualified and experienced in both death investigations in the field as well as assisting the forensic pathologist during autopsies.

  • Nationally Registered and State Licensed Emergency Medical Technician. I have experience responding to emergencies and interacting with local first responders outside of my work as a Deputy Coroner.

  • EMT and CPR Instructor. I have experience building and delivering training programs for both the public and first responders. I led the EMS Program at the University of Illinois Fire Service Institute, including leading the staffing for EMS at the COVID-19 Vaccine Clinics at the I-Hotel.   I led the delivery of the first blended EMT class in Champaign County.

  • Corrections Officer. I worked for the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office as a Corrections Officer.  There, I gained experience working with local law enforcement and gained insight and training in the legal system.

  • Emergency Department Technician. I worked in the Emergency Department at Carle Foundation Hospital, which gave me my first exposure to meeting the complex needs of grieving families.  I worked alongside doctors and nurses as part of the team that provided care to persons on some of the most difficult days of their lives.

I’ve also had the opportunity to spend several years in customer service in health-related positions that helped me grow my focus on the experience that people have when interacting with an agency like the Coroner’s Office. I knew I wanted to run for this office shortly after I started working there.  This isn’t a spur-of-the-moment action for me.  My entire adult life has consisted of uncommon careers and opportunities that have given me a background that has uniquely prepared me to lead this office into the future.

Laurie is endorsed by:

  • Julie Pryde, Public Health Administrator, Champaign-Urbana Public Health District

  • Transparency

The office must operate in an open manner, exhibiting honesty and professionalism.  Calls from the public must be returned promptly.  The work of the office, from responding to a death scene to investigations to documentation, must all be done with the best interests of the community in mind and within view of the public the office serves

  • Efficiency

Modernizing the Coroner’s office and the practices the staff use will help us improve efficiency.  Current technology, equipment, and procedures all provide opportunities for growth and updating to make the office more efficient.

  • Compassion

I believe that this office must show compassion to those that we serve. I believe in showing people respect and treating them with integrity.  The office must demonstrate compassion and respect in all aspects of interacting with the families of decedents.
